
Danica Sue Patrick is an American former professional racer. She has been the most successful female ever to compete in American open-wheel racing. Her victory at the 2008 Indy Japan 300 is the only woman to win at an IndyCar Series race.Born to a working-class family from Beloit, Wisconsin, Patrick began karting at age of ten and achieved early success by winning her class at the World Karting Association Grand National Championship three times during the mid-1990s. With the consent of her parents she quit high school and moved to the United Kingdom in 1998 to pursue her career. Patrick participated in Formula Vauxhall and Formula Ford before returning to the United States in 2001 due to a lack of funds. In 2002, she took part in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races with Rahal Letterman racing. Patrick was an official Toyota Atlantic Series racer for the following two seasons. Her best performance was when she finished third in championship standings in 2004 when she became the first woman to take a pole in the series.She began her career in the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2005. She scored three pole positions, equaling Tomas Scheckter's record for poles in a rookie season. She was named the Rookie of the Year in both the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and the 2005 IndyCar Series. She improved in the subsequent two seasons, racing with Rahal Letterman Racing 2006, and later Andretti Green Racing 2007. Patrick was sixth in the driver's standings following her victory in Japan. She improved her position to finish fifth in drivers' standings following the season. This was her most impressive performance at the Indianapolis 500 and a career-high for Patrick. Patrick's overall form dropped during 2010, but she managed to finish second at the oval tracks. After that, she left IndyCar in 2011 to concentrate on stock car racing full time.
