Madekwe was raised by a mixed ethnic family. Her father and mother have both been English. She was raised on the southern part of London Council Estate. She was a student at The Brit School aged 14. She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. While at the academy, she performed in numerous performances on stage, such as the King Henry V playing Princess Katherine and Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe's acting career started with Storm Damage. She has since made appearances on Teachers, Doctors Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe made her debut motion-picture role in the Woody Allen film Cassandra's Dream, opposite Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. Following this acclaim, she played Elisha in her role on the BBC Three drama pilot West 10 LDN and appeared for six seasons Trexx and Flipside. She also landed the role in the role of Bambi on The ITV2 drama series Secret Diary of a Call Girl which aired in series two and three. Madekwe also played the title character in How to lose friends & betray people that was aired by Sony Pictures Entertainment 2008. She was also as a character in Little Sweet Thing, by Roy Williams, and Flight Path written composed by David Watson.
Madekwe debuted in the US in the US with The Beautiful Life. The drama series aired in the US on The CW for only two episodes before being cancelled. Ashley Davenport, a character from ABC's Revenge drama series was cast for her as Ashley Davenport. Madekwe's exit from the series was announced in May 2013. After a period of two years as the main character she was a guest in the first episode of season 3. The actress played Tituba in the TV series Salem in 2014 until. Then, in June of 2012 she was married to her long-time love, actor Iddo Goldberg. Alongside Secret Diary of a Call Girl They have also collaborated in tandem on Salem and Iddo Goldberg had an appearance with her on that TV show.

Ashley Leggat, a twice Gemini nominated actress was raised in a large family living in Hamilton, Ontario. Ashley Leggat joined Roy and Patty along with her three older siblings: Brett, Todd and Bram as well as Rob. The four brothers of Ashley, who were all extremely active, took part in hockey in the winter months and played baseball in the summers, meaning they grew up mostly in parks and arenas. Ashley did not walk, but she did dance, so when she was two and a half she took up Baby Ballet -and she fell in love with. Ashley was hooked on dance since that time. Ashley was a dancer who competed in all the major divisions up until her graduation from high school. She competed in ballet, jazz, tap, pointe and acrobatics.
